Midwifery Services are 100% covered by Alberta Healthcare
Prenatal care is about more than routine checkups—it's about building a trusting relationship with the midwives who will support you throughout your pregnancy, birth, and postpartum journey. Sherwood Park Midwives provide comprehensive prenatal care that focuses on both your physical health and your emotional well-being, while supporting informed decision-making every step of the way.
Regular prenatal appointments monitor the health of you and your baby, track your baby's growth and development, and provide opportunities to discuss nutrition, lifestyle, pregnancy symptoms, birth planning, and any questions or concerns you may have. Prenatal visits become more frequent as your pregnancy progresses, ensuring you receive the care and support you need as your due date approaches.
Prenatal Care
During labour, your midwife closely monitors your health and your baby’s well-being, assessing labour progress, fetal heart rate, maternal vital signs - documenting our findings along the way. We provide continuous guidance, support, and practical measures to help you cope with labour, including movement, positioning, breathing techniques, hydrotherapy, and other comfort strategies. We also discuss pain management options and support your choices, whether you prefer an unmedicated birth or medical pain relief such as nitrous oxide or an epidural.
Midwives are trained to recognize when labour is progressing normally and when additional medical care may be needed. If complications arise, we collaborate closely with obstetricians, anesthesiologists, pediatricians, and nursing staff to ensure you receive timely, appropriate care while advocating for you to remain an active participant in decision-making.
Midwives carry oxygen, emergency medications and all of the medical supplies needed for emergencies such as, but not limited to, postpartum hemorrhage and neonatal resuscitation.
Birth
Following your baby’s birth, your midwife continues to care for both you and your newborn. We monitor recovery, assess bleeding, support skin-to-skin contact, encourage early breastfeeding or feeding, perform newborn assessments, and provide guidance as your family begins the transition home. If your birth takes place in the hospital and you and your baby are well, discharge often occurs within 3–24 hours, depending on your individual circumstances.
Postpartum visits include monitoring the parent’s healing, assessing bleeding, pain, blood pressure, and overall health, while also screening for postpartum mood and anxiety disorders. Midwives provide education on newborn care, safe sleep, feeding, contraception, and warning signs that require medical attention. Newborn assessments include monitoring weight gain, feeding, jaundice, hydration, growth, and overall health, as well as performing routine newborn screening and coordinating referrals when needed.
A key aspect of midwifery postpartum care is the continuity of the therapeutic relationship established during pregnancy, allowing care to be individualized to each family’s physical, emotional, cultural, and social needs. Through evidence-based care, education, and ongoing support, midwives help families build confidence and promote healthy outcomes for both parent and baby during the postpartum period.
